Understand Melasma, the cause & how to treat it

What is Melasma?

Ever wondered what those annoying small pigmented marks are that appear on your skin, on your face and neck? They are most likely to be Melasma.

Melasma can also be called 'chloasma' or 'pregnancy mask' and is a common skin condition in adults in which brown patches of pigmentation develop. They present themselves as freckle-like spots and larger flat, brown patches on the skin found on both sides of the face, jawline, forehead, neck & chest and are irregular in shape.

What is the cause of Melasma?

Skin cell malfunction. The pigmentation in the skin is due to the overproduction of melanin by the pigment cells (melanocytes) which is taken up by the keratinocytes (epidermal melanosis) and deposited in the dermis.

Known triggers are pregnancy, contraceptive pills containing oestrogen and progesterone, hormone replacement and hypothyroidism..

How to treat Melasma

Melasma may fade on it's own over time, chemical peels can also help. A dermatologist or beauty therapist will be able to confirm a Melasma diaganosis and should be able to treat it with laser therapy. Laser treatment will remove it but it is stubborn and is most likely to return. Sun screen is a necessity as any sun/UV exposure will cause Melasma to darken. Products containing Vitamin C can help to lighten the skin and improve it's appearance.
